HEAD COACH AL WERMER

 
Head Coach Al WermerWermer is the winningest active coach in all sports at UT with 299 victories and has coached 34 Rockets to All-MAC honors. Wermer has led the Rockets to 11 MAC Conference Tournament finals or semi-finals.
In the classroom, the Rockets under Wermer have earned 18 Academic All-MAC awards and 11 Academic All-MAC Honorable Mentions.
 
In Wermer's tenure, he's coached an ITA Midwest Regional Arthur Ashe Leadership Award winner, an ITA Midwest Regionals singles semi-finalist, multiple MAC Players of the Year and recipients of the MAC Senior Sportsmanship Award. Stjepan Sisko won three-straight MAC Player of the Year awards from 2013-15. Most recently, Pawit Sornlaksup was named MAC Player of the Year, First Team All-MAC and MAC All-Tournament Team in 2021-22.
 
Wermer has served many terms as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Midwest Men's Regional Chairman and on the ITA National Division I Operating Committee, developing policy for college tennis, including being part of a recent momentous initiative. He is a regular speaker at national and regional tennis coaches' conventions.
 
Coach Al has also dramatically enhanced facilities and community engagement, making Rocket Tennis relevant on campus and in the community. He's been instrumental in two major tennis facility upgrades at the University of Toledo, as well as the renovation to the men's tennis locker room.
 
Visible in the community, Wermer founded the Rocket Tennis Dream Academy for underserved youth. He's also directed cancer awareness initiatives, free kids clinics and pro-am events.
 
A graduate of Capital University with a degree in physical education, he played a season on the pro circuit. Coach Al began his college coaching with the Crusaders. He received his Master of Arts in recreation and leisure studies from Toledo and a second Master's degree in sport psychology.
 
Wermer and his wife, Nancy, have been married for 25 years. He enjoys biking, traveling and reading.
